Lincoln Artist Linda Stephen’s origami collage landscapes are featured for three months in a solo exhibit “Seasons Unfolding: Linda Stephen Origami Landscapes” at the Lancaster County-City Building, 555 S. 10th Street in Lincoln. Linda Stephen’s origami bas relief landscapes incorporate hundreds of her intricate 3D origami (folded paper) sculptures made from handmade papers from Japan and around the world.
The exhibit, which includes more than a dozen artworks including scenes of Pioneers Park sledding hill, walking/biking at Holmes Lake Park, and Trendwood Park on a kite-flying day in April, opens June 6 and runs through August 29. Managed by the Public Building Commission, the exhibition is located on the building’s first floor. The exhibit is free and open to the public weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The opening reception will be held Friday June 6 from 4:30-6 p.m. during the June First Friday Art Walk. The artist talk is at 5:15 p.m. The public is invited to meet the artist and learn more about the paper arts of Japan and the intricate process of inventing origami sculptures and creating a landscape from hundreds of folded paper pieces. The exhibit is curated by Liz Shea-McCoy. Other artists in the 2013-2014 County-City exhibition schedule were Dale Gibbs, FAIA, James McClelland, and Deon Bahr, FAIA.
Linda lived and worked in Japan for seven years and her origami art landscapes are now part of public and private collections across the U.S. and Japan. In 2013, Linda was an artist with CSArt, the Lincoln Arts Council Community Supported Art project. In 2014, she is an artist in residence with the National Parks Service and will be presenting workshops at the Homestead National Monument in Beatrice, Neb. in July and August. Commissioned projects include an animated origami dollar bill commercial for Tobacco Free Nebraska and the JW Marriott Hotel’s “sister city” collection in Grand Rapids, Mich.
